Canada’s Dangerous Descent: MAiD for Children and the Radical Ideologies of the Liberal Party and NDP

In a chilling development that should alarm every Canadian who values life, the Liberal government, with support from the NDP, is pushing the boundaries of Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program to include children—euphemistically termed “mature minors.” This radical expansion of assisted suicide, already a contentious issue, is a step too far, threatening the most vulnerable among us and exposing the dangerous ideologies driving the Liberal Party of Canada and the New Democratic Party (NDP). As Conservatives, we stand firm in our belief that life must be protected, not discarded, and we reject the reckless agenda that prioritizes ideology over ethics.
MAiD for Kids: A Disturbing Proposal
Since its legalization in 2016, MAiD has been sold as a compassionate option for adults facing unbearable suffering from terminal illnesses. However, the Liberal government has repeatedly expanded its scope, first to include those with mental illnesses (a move Conservatives fiercely oppose) and now, shockingly, to consider children. Reports from parliamentary committees, including the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying established in 2021, have explored extending MAiD to “mature minors”—children deemed capable of making life-ending decisions, potentially without parental consent.
This proposal is not only ethically bankrupt but also deeply troubling in its implications. Children, even those with serious illnesses or disabilities, lack the life experience and emotional maturity to make irreversible decisions about their own mortality. The idea that a child could be offered assisted suicide—possibly influenced by societal pressures, inadequate support systems, or even temporary despair—defies reason and compassion. Conservatives believe in nurturing hope and providing care, not ushering children toward death.
The Liberal-NDP coalition’s push for this policy ignores warnings from experts and advocates. Disability rights groups have condemned MAiD expansions, arguing they devalue the lives of vulnerable Canadians, including those with disabilities who may feel pressured to choose death due to a lack of support services. Stories of veterans with PTSD being offered MAiD by government employees and Canadians citing poverty as a reason for seeking assisted death highlight the program’s gross mishandling. Yet, the Liberals and NDP seem intent on doubling down, extending this flawed system to children.
The Radical Ideologies of the Liberal Party
The Liberal Party, under Justin Trudeau, has embraced a radical ideology that prioritizes individual autonomy above all else, even at the expense of vulnerable lives. Their support for MAiD began with promises of strict safeguards but has morphed into a troubling “culture of death,” as Conservative MP Ed Fast aptly described. The Liberals’ 2021 Bill C-7, which expanded MAiD to include those with mental illnesses, was a direct response to a Quebec court ruling but went far beyond what was necessary, removing critical safeguards like the 10-day reflection period.
This obsession with expanding MAiD reflects a broader Liberal ideology that fetishizes personal choice while ignoring systemic failures. Instead of investing in mental health services, palliative care, or disability supports, the Liberals offer death as a solution. Their 2015 policy resolution on “Death with Dignity” claimed that decriminalizing assisted death would protect patients and families, but it glossed over the risks to marginalized groups. By pushing MAiD for children, the Liberals reveal a chilling disregard for the sanctity of life, treating it as a disposable commodity rather than an inherent gift.
The Liberal government’s refusal to heed expert warnings—such as those from the heads of psychiatry at Canada’s 17 medical schools, who called for a delay in MAiD for mental illness—shows their ideological blind spot. Their willingness to let unelected senators amend legislation to include mental illness and potentially minors further undermines democratic accountability. Conservatives reject this top-down, elitist approach that prioritizes ideology over evidence and compassion.
The NDP’s Complicity in Radicalism
The NDP, often cloaking their policies in the language of compassion, are complicit in this dangerous expansion. While they’ve raised concerns about safeguards, their support for MAiD’s broader framework reveals a radical streak that aligns with the Liberals. In 2020, NDP Justice Critic Randall Garrison pushed for removing barriers to MAiD, arguing that restrictive laws forced Canadians to end their lives prematurely. This stance, while framed as empathetic, ignores the slippery slope toward normalizing assisted death as a solution to suffering.
The NDP’s 2015 election platform promised swift action on assisted dying, embedding it within healthcare and prioritizing access over prevention. Their support for Bill C-7, despite acknowledging its flaws, shows a willingness to compromise principles for political expediency. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s eventual opposition to the revised bill was less about ethical concerns and more about rejecting Senate amendments—a weak stand that failed to address the bill’s deeper issues.
The NDP’s radical ideology lies in their uncritical embrace of state intervention to “solve” complex social issues. By advocating for MAiD without robust safeguards, they risk endorsing a system where the state, rather than families or communities, decides who lives and who dies. Their proposed national income support program to prevent coerced MAiD requests is a band-aid solution that doesn’t address the root problem: a healthcare system that fails to prioritize life-affirming care.
A Conservative Stand for Life
As Conservatives, we believe in a Canada that protects its most vulnerable, not one that offers them death as an escape. The expansion of MAiD to children is a moral and ethical line we cannot cross. Conservative MP Ed Fast’s Bill C-314, which sought to exclude mental illness from MAiD eligibility, was a principled attempt to halt this reckless trajectory, but it was defeated by Liberal and NDP votes. We continue to call for an indefinite pause on MAiD expansions, as urged by Conservative MP Michael Cooper, until the healthcare system is equipped to prioritize life over death.
The Liberal-NDP agenda threatens to erode the values that make Canada a compassionate society. Their radical ideologies—obsessed with autonomy at all costs and blind to the vulnerabilities of children, the disabled, and the mentally ill—have no place in a nation that cherishes life. Conservatives will fight for better mental health care, stronger disability supports, and a healthcare system that offers hope, not despair.
Conclusion: A Call to Action
The proposal to extend MAiD to children is a wake-up call for Canadians. We cannot stand idly by as the Liberal government and their NDP allies push a radical agenda that endangers our youth and undermines the sanctity of life. As Conservatives, we urge every Canadian to speak out, contact their MPs, and demand a halt to this dangerous expansion.
Let’s build a Canada that protects its children, supports its vulnerable, and chooses life over death.
Together, we can stop this madness and restore a culture of hope and compassion.
