Across Alberta, a powerful movement is gaining unstoppable momentum. Ordinary Albertans—hard-working families, small business owners, farmers, and energy workers—are lining up in the freezing cold, stretching around blocks and filling community halls to capacity, all to put their name on the Stay Free Alberta petition. This citizen-initiated drive aims to force a referendum on Alberta's independence, giving the people a direct say in breaking free from Ottawa's overreach and endless interference.

The response has been nothing short of extraordinary. In towns big and small, from Calgary to Red Deer, Fort McMurray, Millet, Vulcan, and beyond, events organized by Stay Free Alberta are being overwhelmed by supporters. Halls fill up an hour before start time, lines snake down streets, and thousands brave the prairie winter to stand up for their future. Reports describe scenes of "blocks-long" queues in southeast Calgary's Queensland community, standing-room-only crowds in tiny Millet (where the line wrapped around the block), and massive turnouts in Red Deer that dwarfed expectations. Even in small communities, the energy is electric—people aren't just signing; they're fired up, ready to reclaim control over their resources, economy, and way of life.

This isn't about fringe ideas—it's about common-sense frustration with a federal government that seems to punish Alberta at every turn: crippling energy policies, unfair equalization payments, attacks on our industries, and a complete disregard for the hardworking people who keep this province—and this country—running. Supporters are sending a clear message: Enough is enough. Alberta deserves to chart its own course, keep more of what it earns, and build a prosperous, sovereign future without constant meddling from distant bureaucrats.

The passion on display is inspiring. As one organizer noted, events across the province are hitting capacity, with volunteers working tirelessly to process signatures. The petition needs 177,732 valid signatures by early May 2026 to trigger the referendum question: "Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?" The groundswell suggests we're well on our way—Albertans are rising up because they believe in self-determination, fiscal responsibility, and the right to govern themselves.

Here are just a few glimpses of the incredible support pouring in:

  • In Calgary's Queensland neighborhood, lines stretched for blocks as the hall filled early—proof that this movement is grassroots and growing fast.

  • Small-town Millet saw its community hall packed, with the queue extending around the block—ordinary folks turning out in force.

  • Red Deer and other venues reported overwhelming crowds, with supporters arriving from across the region.

  • Eckville had lineups around the block, jam packed event

This is what real democracy looks like—people taking action to protect their freedoms.

How to Sign the Petition and Join the Movement

Signatures must be collected in person by registered canvassers (no online or mail-in options) to ensure everything meets Elections Alberta rules. You'll need to bring government-issued ID (like a driver's license) showing your name and Alberta address. If your address isn't clear (e.g., rural or PO box), bring extra proof like a utility bill.

The petition period runs until early May 2026—don't wait! Mark your calendar, bring your ID, and add your voice to this historic push for Alberta's freedom.

Albertans are proving that when the people stand together, real change is possible. The crowds aren't slowing down—they're growing. Let's keep the momentum going and build a stronger, freer Alberta for generations to come.
